The 5.56x45mm cartridge is standard issue for NATO and non-NATO forces throughout the world. The M16, AR15 and M4 rifles all use the 5.56mm cartridge. The United States Military uses the M855 (NATO SS109) cartridge. This cartridge features a 62gr bullet with a steel core. In 2010, the United States Military adopted an improved version of the M855, called the M855A1.

The 5.56mm NATO cartridge is similar to the .223 Remington cartridge. The use of the 5.56x45mm cartridge is not recommended for rifles chambered in .223 Remington.
